Sorry for giving the wrong impression I didn't mean any disrespect to Team Salvato or to imply any poor writing on Dan's part. That just removes a lot of the nuance and effort from the original. I get the impression that you think they were thrown in there with the barest minimum of effort for shock when they actually function as though they would in real life (albeit exhaggerated from Yuri), which contributes to the feeling of horror and sadness. And my relationship with my mother is at least partially abusive so I understand Natsuki's need to escape and her defensiveness about her hobby. ![]() I also went through bullying a lot as a kid, which led me down this route and led me to my depression so I actually understood Yuri, which made her descent all the more disturbing. The lack of will to do anything, the want to help others out of a feeling of self worthlessness and a constant urge to just end it all. I wouldn't have been nearly as unsettled by the game if Sayori didn't remind me so much of myself and the depression I have. I feel as though I have to criticize you for that. "-it mostly uses these themes for shock value in the horror sections." (I've always hated that, so it's about time I fixed it!) :) ![]() In previous versions, you had to skip it manually to get to the beginning of the mod. (Contains spoilers for Monika's route also contains profanity)ĮDIT3: As of today, October 17, 2018, there's a new version of this mod which skips the beginning of the game. (After I finish other projects) It can be found here. It comes after Monika's lines, "What are you doing?" "Don't touch me!"ĮDIT: UPDATE! I just made some LP videos of myself going through my mod! Click the links below to witness my valiant attempts at voice-acting! :DĮDIT2: EDIT HARDER! :D I also made a teaser video for a sequel based on Monika's route which I will probably make eventually. Natsuki's route: References to abuse, homophobia, and transphobia Yuri's route: References to self-harm and bullying ![]() Sayori's route: Detailed talk of depression, suicide, and suicidal ideation The triggers in this mod are generally pretty mild, I think, but I include warnings anyway for anyone sensitive to any of these issues. It might not be apparent at first, but once you play through one of the other routes, I think it will become clear.Ĭredit for extra art to /u/Zeus_KrAZy for the Natsuki sprites and /u/leodecraprio for the Sayori sprite. It is intended to be a bit of a feels train, but I promise that the stories for all four girls have happy endings and, most importantly, none of them die. (I will include a list of all pertinent trigger warnings in spoiler tags, since they may be slightly spoilery) This mod is not, by any means, intended as a guide for how to deal with any of these issues it's merely a story of teenagers who are trying to deal with these situations as best as they can. So I wanted to write a story which deals with these topics (and more!) in a sensitive manner. and as much as I love the game, it mostly uses these themes for shock value in the horror sections. Depression, suicide, self-harm, abuse, etc. On September 26th, 2017, work began on a mod called Monika After Story started by Backdash, which changes a late scene in the game such that the player can simply spend a lot of time with the character Monika and have conversations that the original game's ending doesn't allow. Here it is, the mod that offers comfort and happy endings to all the Dokis! :Dĭoki Doki Literature Club deals with a lot of dark themes. By "creating poems," a mechanic in which players select words that either resonate more with either Sayori, Yuri, or Natsuki, leading the player down their "route." Monika does not have a route.Ī modding community has surfaced emerged around the game, as demand for different, happier versions of the game arose. All the girls seem to express some romantic interest in the player-character. There, he meets Yuri, Natsuki, and Monika, the club president. In the game, the player is invited by their childhood friend Sayori to join a literature club at school. ![]() The game also inspired internet memes and achieved a large following online. Doki Doki Literature Club is a free-to-play anime-style psychological horror game presented as a romance visual novel, which was released for Windows and Mac systems by the game development studio Team Salvato in late September 2017.
